Florida's inland waterways offer great beauty and opportunities to explore a new ecosystem…whether explored by airboat, scuba equipment, or snorkeling gear.

Michigan resident Denise Magoon completed her local training dives in December, happily proving that the quarries are fun all year long.

The Blue Grotto location in Florida offers a great chance for both open water and cavern divers to visit unique spots such as the diving bell there and the Peace Rock.

At Jellyfish Lake in Palau, an inland lake is absolutely packed (hundreds of thousands) with these creatures (species mastigias) that over the many years this lake has been separated from the ocean, one may snorkel amid the animals without fear of any stinging nematocysts.

The Fishersville quarry is leased and maintained for the express purpose of providing a safe and beautiful dive site for local instructors and their students. Twenty-seven acres in size, it boasts a large expanse of 30 foot max diving with two boats, two platforms, and numerous "toys," and also has a deep water section. It's home to bluegill sunfish, bass, catfish, thumbnail-sized jellyfish, turtles, red-spotted newts, cattails, naiads, water plantain, beak rushes, and other great freshwater attractions.

The right gear for the environment: dry suits for the cold waters in San Diego's kelp beds.

Today many divers prefer to sign up for a week or so of liveaboard diving, like this happy group from the Shearwater, out of West Palm Beach, FL. One price = lodging, food, cylinders and air fills, the best sites the boat can move to each day.

Australia's Great Barrier Reef is another of those places where liveaboard boats like the Nimrod III make a lot of sense for your diving $$ and experience. Our trip included divers from Japan, England, Italy, California, New York City…and of course the two of us from Charlottesville!

Divers are very easy to please…14 feet of water, a dozen stringrays, a cup of squid to give out, and a $10 underwater camera to capture the experience.

Now, doesn't this look like a quintet of trouble makers? Getting ready to tube on the Sante Fe River at Ginnie Springs, Florida….Mary Eades, Erica Eades McLaughlin, Anne Mills, Lauren Eades, Elizabeth Mills
